NIGERIA AND DEMOCRACY
By; LUKMAN JAMIU ASIRI
To start with, Democracy was defined “as the government of the people, by the people and for the people” by the late Abraham Lincoln(The 12th American President). And according to Robert Dahl in 1971, he explained Democracy “as a system of government, whereby opportunity to participate in decision making is widely shared among all citizens.”
Is Nigeria truly a democratic Nation?
Yes! Constitutionally, it is a democratic Nation. Though, functionally not. As at the present moment, Nigeria has nothing to proof the fact that, she’s fully democratic. According to my own view, Nigeria is partially democratic. I mean, Nigeria government are not exercising democracy as supposed.
Nigeria democracy is the government of few, by the few and for the same few. Or I should put it this way, It is the government of party(that emerged winner), by the party and for the same party, and not government of the generality.
The opportunity to participate in decision making is not of any form shared among citizens, almost all our executives are functionless, judicial officers are unjust, legislators are representing themselves, they are making selfish decisions, not seeking citizens opinions. They value money nation’s progress. And God will surely question them on the day of resurrection, which may/will absolutely lead majority of them to abysmal sorrow, infinite sufferings and the abyss of hellfire hereafter.
Governments do not take care of those that elected them into power, they never reached out to them or carry them along. They never care for citizens welfarism, but they solve their personal problems solely. They were not there to make a very good history for themselves, they never think of how to make policies that will affect and touch the lives of the masses positively.
Students and masses lives are being put to risk during campaign and elections period, by recruiting them into INEC for jobs. They bribe them or force them with guns to accept rigged elections or they should be killed if refused to cooperate. All these are affecting us negatively and never helped our democracy in any form.
It will take unpredictable time of mine, if I wish to continue stating the democratic challenges in Nigeria. It is better for our governments(executives, legislators and judicial personnels) to rethink, rebuild and brought into realization, the Nigeria of our dream.
We can respond to Nigeria democratic challenges by revisiting the 1999 constitution. The insecurity, bad governance, corruption, and lack of economic development are the result of huge amount of money given to the political office holders. Salaries and allowances shouldn’t be given to political office holders who want to serve the masses. At least their salaries shouldn’t up to a million, as it will surely reduce the overuse of power, incessant killings, bad governance, and our economy will increase to the unexpected extent.
To cap it all, it is not only Nigerians that deserve new Nigeria, Nigeria also deserves new Nigerians. It is through our collective responsibilities, that we can make Nigeria great. In togetherness, Nigeria of Our dream is achievable.
God bless Nigeria and Nigerians!
