The National Council of the Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union which is an umbrella body that represents the interest of all students in the Pacesetter State has congratulated the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde on the occasion of second year anniversary and reminds him his campaign promise to disburse bursary to Oyo Students annually.
The National President of the union, Com. Azeez Muritala Olowoeko while addressing the press lauds the effort of His Excellency towards having Oyo State of our dream. He defines his commitment as that of a patriots.
The president recalls that Engr. Seyi Makinde has during the electioneering process promised Oyo State Students bursary in every year of his administration and we have considered it imperative to remind his Excellency this worthwhile promise.
There is no gainsaying in the fact that everybody has been affected by the scourge of Covid 19 and the economic crisis that followed. People are gasping for air, struggling to survive and earn a living. Our survey has shown that over 80% of the students in the state have seen a drastic fall in the income of those who sponsor or support their education as a result of the state of the nation’s economy. They therefore struggle financially, facing huge challenges in paying their school fees, rents, feeding themselves, getting study materials amongst many other challenges.
Our members have found themselves in a very toxic situation and we as a Union are deeply concerned. This situation has forced many of our members into very risky jobs that they are not trained to do just to provide for themselves. Last year, a young promising FOSSU member was snatched by the cold hands of death in a factory accident while struggling to support himself..
As today marks the second year anniversary of the present administration, we are optimistic that something would be done to alleviate and cushion the effect of the financial challenges faced by our members. Just yesterday, the Ogun state government started the disbursement of bursary to their students in celebration of their second year anniversary.
FOSSU as a union, will always continue to agitate for the interests of our members and insist that the dividends of good governance is felt by us too, as critical part of Oyo State population.
Finally, the president reminds the governor the role played by our union in his emergence and urge him to rise up and take steps that are necessary. We are aware of the challenges of governing the state and the massive responsibilities shouldered by the Governor but nevertheless we seek engagement towards effectively addressing the challenges of students in the state.
We wish you a more prosperous years in office as you celebrate today sir.
